Just came accross this beautiful house featured in The Washington Post in June 09. This charming house with the green glazed tile roof and wondow shutters is owned by Loi Thai and partner Thomas Troeschel. The two are also the owners of Tone on Tone, a shop specializing in 18th and 19th century painted Swedish antiques.
*

Let’s start with the exterior. Simple and pretty. The front door was actually moved from the centre to the side of the house.
*

The whole of the inside is painted the same pale gray color with crisp white trim and pale floors of white bleached wide-plank oak. Loi is quoted in The Washington Post saying “as you can see, I’m my best customer.” True dat. See how they use contrast to define the space (black glasstop coffee table). They have also used the magic of texture and patterns to keep the room from looking bland and boring.
*

The kitchen is equally neutral and elegant, with the counters almost blending into the walls. The green pandant lamps ads a kick and brings the kitchen island into focus.
*

The chair at the desk is actually a slipcovered Parsons chair from Ikea. Talk about having an eye for mixing. I would never have guessed..
*

The classic dining table (on wheels might I add) and the lantern are definitely the focal points of this dining room. Wonder what the dining chair cushions are covered with?
*
Loi has a unique approach to his precious antique furniture, saying “… this type of furniture only gets better when it gets beat-up.” From looking at his home, I was very surprised about his down to earth approach to decorating when reading his interview. Read the whole article here, it is definitely interesting!

This cream and light blue living room is so interesting yet so soft and serene. What makes it interesting is the different patterns and textures, not to mention the leopard print Victorian chair and seashell mirror frame. Despite this unusual combination, the color palette brings it all together into the most calm and beautiful space.

Geometry 101, lol! Love this pretty mirror.
*
Pretty desk for the nostalgic.

I love this idea of using a shell curtain in place of a shower curtain. Not as effective, but undoubtedly prettier to look at.
*
The shell curtain. Like snow flakes, yet far from it..

So, you have a beautiful old dresser that you love, but it does not fit in with the rest of your home. What do you do? Check out these photos by photographer James Merrell:
*
This beautiful 9-drawer dresser is painted a wonderful shade of grey, while the pretty details are hand painted in a lighter shade. The tulip lamps are very cute, and the furniture fits perfectly into the room.
*

This small desk is painted black, while the beautiful carvings on the legs and puller handles stand out in gold.
*
This dresser is completely covered in purple paint, and even so, the beautiful details shines trough. A real eye-catcher.
*

I guess these beds still has their original paint. Mint green with gold details is the idea here.
*

This classic dining chair is painted pink, with cream colored upholstery, and adds a fun element in an all-white dining room.
