2 Tricks for a Blue and Yellow Color Palette

HGTV Canada’s design duo Colin and Justin are two of my new color heroes (I have many). Since I don’t live in Canada I hadn’t heard of them of seen their show before, but boy am I glad I came across these two. What I like about their design style is their fantastic color palettes. For instance here are some of their lively blue and yellow designs:

*

modern gray and yellow kitchen

This narrow kitchen is opened up with open shelving. Glossy bright yellow shelving mind you. The wall paint looks something like BM Airway and is accented with bright yellow. White, which is a very reflective and “competitive” color works as the perfect middle man in this color relationship. Can you see what I mean?

Another thing Colin and Justin often do is using the same color palette throughout the floor plan. In this dining room the blue wall color is continued into the base molding and floating shelves, while the yellow accent is kept to a minimum.

modern blue gray and yellow living room with yellow sectional sofa

This modern blue and yellow living room is normally not my style, I usually require drapery on the windows, area rug under the coffee table and a ceiling lamp of some kind, but the color palette is so great that I would gladly move in (and install the drapery later =).

light blue and yellow kids bedroom

Blue and yellow kids room. Notice what a tiny amount of yellow is used in this room, just lining on the curtains and accent pillows, plus a couple of vases filled with fresh flowers.

So what can we learn from Colin and Justin about using blue and yellow in our interiors?

  1. The cool soothing blue is a great base for a vibrant yellow, and is best used together with bright white.
  2. Introduce a dash of yellow on a richer blue background. Use a more muted blue for larger yellow surfaces

So what do you thing of using blue and yellow as a color combination for a room? Would you ever?
